When installed, the user may select an optional paper cassette as the “default” paper source. This feature is found in the Configure dialog during printer Setup from the Chooser. This was a much-requested feature from LaserWriter Pro customers.
• Precision Bitmap Alignment
The driver now scales bitmaps in accordance with the resolution of the output device, scaling down to the nearest multiple of 72 dpi. For 300 DPI printers, this is 288 DPI and is still 4% reduction. For 400 DPI printers, the nearest multiple is 360 DPI, which is 10% reduction. For 800 DPI printers, it's 792 DPI and is 1% reduction, etc.
• Consolidated PPDs
Multiple PPD files for different memory configurations are replaced by a single PPD file containing specifications for different page sizes. For example, there used to be three PPD files for the LaserWriter IIg v2010.113 (4, 5 and 8Mb) - with v8.1.1, there's now one PPD file.
• Improved Color Matching
The driver will use the ColorSync System Profile, if installed on the host, instead of the Apple 13" colorspace profile built into the driver.
In addition, more than 50 bugs have been fixed in version 8.1.1. The following list gives some idea of how much work went into stabilizing the new version. Note that some of the bugs in the list do not apply to version 8.0 because they were introduced during the 8.1.1 development cycle. Some of these bug descriptions are kind of cryptic because they come from the internal bug database.
• Fixed spacing with SuperATM AGaramond italic fonts.
• Having the Minion Multiple Master typeface sometimes produced a "rangecheck"
error.
• The wrong number of copies was sometimes faxed.
• Resolved some memory leaks.
• The "Out of paper" alert while background printing now shows up for all
printers, including the LaserWriter Pro 600 and LaserWriter Pro 630.
• Fixed a bug with QuarkXPress 3.1 and documents with Multiple Master fonts.
• Added languageOption values needed for *LanguageVersion keyword in the
driver's PPD parsing.
• Printers in the Chooser list no longer get the wrong icon.
• Fax sent fax and fax cover sheet but printed Print Options cover sheet
on local printer. Fixed.
• Fixed a PostScript error issued when printing a FreeHand 2.0J document
containing 12 point Times Roman when Unlimited Downloadable Fonts was
selected.
• Continuously calling LineTo with pen size 1 at different location (each
frame 1 point apart), using Precision Bitmap Alignment option showed
incorrect output, and the same was true with FrameRect and FrameRoundRect.
Fixed.
• Two documents from different applications can now be printed from the
Finder.
• Applications that use PrGeneral's setRslOp got document images scaled to
approximately 25%, but only with N-up and Cover Page/Before selected.
Fixed.
• Cover Page "Before" printed incorrectly in N-up with Landscape.
• The driver couldn't connect to a printer in an AppleTalk network with no
zones.
• Known problems printing to Novell spoolers were repaired.
• The destination (printer, file or fax) is now sticky to the document.
• Buttons on dialogs, other than the front, are now disabled if the front
dialog is modal.
• The driver damaged its preferences file whenever a multiple array of
buttons was pressed in the "Printer Setup..." window.
• Printing to a envelope doesn't cause a paper jam on LaserWriter IINT
printers anymore (unless, of course, you actually jam the paper).
• Problems printing a window via Novell NetWare 3.x fixed.
• Page Size and Imageable Area are now in both inches and cm in Page Setup
graphic box.
• Some features not relevant to current printers are not incorrectly
presented.
• Problems with applications that send PAP to the same machine using
"self-send" are fixed.
• The PPD parser now correctly identifies a missing PPD ^ManualFeed item.
• A warning message no longer flashes by too fast to be read.
• The default PostScript Job file name is now document name+".ps".
• After running setup and selecting a PPD, going in to "Select PPD" would
put you at the bottom of the PPD list, rather than placing you at the PPD
selected. Fixed.
• Printing a test file to a Personal LaserWriter NTR via LocalTalk resulted
in no output. Fixed.
• If a VMerror happened, the $error /ostack entry value was -null-. Fixed.
• Constrained page sizes are now handled more robustly.
• Command-. is ignored in the background.
• The "Waiting for printer" dialog never went away if the printer could not
be found in "Auto Setup." Fixed.
• Various dialog layout changed for better user interface, but nothing major.
• An incorrect "watch" cursor in some places is now the arrow cursor.
• A crash when using the driver along with other printer drivers in the system
is fixed. This often showed up with FAX modem drivers.
• All instances of "4% reduction" have been exorcised, because Precision
Bitmap Alignment is no longer always 4% reduction.
• The driver icon for 800 DPI printers is now the standard printer icon
instead of the imagesetter icon.
• A problem with long printer names has been eliminated.
Users of version 8.0 who have experienced problems of any kind are encouraged to upgrade to version 8.1.1 immediately. As always, Apple's PostScript printers are not guaranteed to work with driver versions earlier than the version that ships with the printer, and some of Apple's printers will begin shipping with version 8.1.1 this fall.
